Unknown Landscapes
The Unknown Landscapes Series, consisting of seven pieces, is my earliest exploration into contemporary tile-making in clay. I started experimenting with the form, content, and process during my residency at the Grand Collectif (Grenoble, FR) in early 2022, when I had just come back from my last trip to Iran where for the first time, I visited the central region of the country (Yazd, Ardakan, Meybod and Aghda) known for its magnificent historic earthen architecture. The series was also a vehicle for my drawings on paper to evolve through a different medium and undergo various processes, such as in the methods of mark-making and in the embrace of the uncontrolled serendipity of the chemical reactions between oxides, glazes, and clay properties in the kiln. Aesthetically, the series contains works incised with imagery of architectural forms, domestic objects and language as well as abstractions relying more on material experimentation. Whether the landscapes contain distortions, from the disproportionate scales of the vaults and the vases, or the bubble-like effects obscuring the incised forms, the process of production remains an intimate personal space where, through distance and memory, I explore my strong psychological and emotional connections to an environment once lived.
